Harry Roque said that it’s up to Bongbong Marcos if he wanted to apologize for the atrocities during martial law.
HARRY ROQUE — The senatorial aspirant said that it’s up to former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr if he wanted to apologize for the atrocities during martial law.
On Monday, Roque said in an interview over ABS-CBN News Channel that it would be better if Bongbong apologized for the atrocities during the regime of his father. However, this wasn’t something he would insist upon.
Roque also believed that Bongbong wasn’t an “evil person” he “portrayed the dictatorship to be”.
The former Palace spokesman maintained that Bongbong wasn’t responsible for what his father did during the martial law era and the former senator shouldn’t be forced to apologize for it.
“You cannot attribute the sins of the father to the son. I see no reason for him to apologize given he was 15 when martial law was declared,” Roque said. “It is up to him if he wants to apologize, it would be better but it’s not something I would insist upon because that’s not in the nature of an apology.”
Roque also pointed out that Bongbong wasn’t included in the cases against the Marcoses in cases of ill-gotten wealth and said that “it’s mostly his parents”.

The former Palace spokesman added that he found Bongbong to be “completely different from public perception” as he described the former senator as “very unassuming” and “very humble”.
“I guess from a personal level, I don’t think he is the evil person that I portrayed the dictatorship to be,” Roque said, referring to Bongbong. “You do have to give credit to the individual personalities of the public figures.”
Roque was one of the senatorial aspirants under the slate of Bongbong, who was running for the presidency in the 2022 elections. According to him, the reason why he’s supporting Bongbong was because of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte.
The former Palace spokesman also said that he rallied support for Bongbong because no other candidate adopted him in their senatorial slate.
