COMELEC will verify the YouTube channels of political candidates.
COMELEC — The Commission on Elections said that it will coordinate with YouTube in order to verify the official channels of political candidates in the platform.
COMELEC Spokesperson James Jimenez tweeted that they’ll be working with YouTube to add a verified badge for official candidates that submitted their official YouTube channel to the poll body.
According to him, it’s one way of eliminating false information during the election season.
“Having a verified account improves accountability. Know however, that even verified accounts can – and do – sometimes spread misleading or even false information,” Jimenez said. “Even verified accounts sometimes traffic in fake news. But at least there is accountability for the information a verified account propagates.”

Jimenez’s statement came as the Commission on Elections said in the resolution that only verified accounts, websites, blogs, and/or social media pages may run electoral ads and may promote or boost electoral posts.
Based on Comelec Resolution No. 10730, each registered political party, as well as political candidate, shall register with the poll body under the Education and Information Department (EID) the website name and web address of all platform verified official accounts, websites, blogs, and/or other social media pages of such political party or political candidate within 30 days from the last day of the period for the filing of the certificate of candidacy (COC).
According to the poll body, information contained in online campaign propaganda shall be “truthful and not misleading”, nor shall it tend to unjustifiably cast doubt on the integrity of the electoral process.
