Lacson encouraged COMELEC to coordinate with NPC to prevent “digital vote buying” in the 2022 elections.

PANFILO LACSON — The presidential aspirant and incumbent senator encouraged the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) to coordinate with the National Privacy Commission (NPC) in order to prevent “digital vote buying” in the 2022 elections.

In Partido Reporma’s weekly “Meet the Press” program last November 25, the Partido Reporma standard-bearer said that fake news and vote buying were the top threats not only for the 2022 elections but for democracy as well.

According to him, the poll body and the NPC will coordinate more closely in order to address the problem of “digital vote buying” ahead of the 2022 elections.

“So, kailangan talaga, ‘yung resolve ng Comelec, kung gusto nila i-correct ito, ngayon pa lang dapat nakikipag-ugnayan na sila more closely with the Data Privacy Commission nang sa ganoon ma-address kaagad natin itong problema ng digital vote buying,” Lacson said.

Lacson’s remark came after COMELEC Commissioner Rowena Guanzon said that vote buying and fake news were the top threats to the elections.

Partido Reporma also emphasized that this was one of the reasons why the campaign of Lacson and his running-mate, Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III, continued to elevate the discussions on the country’s issues to Filipino voters because a temporary handout during the elections won’t solve the country’s myriad problems.

You know, that’s desperation. If you get one thousand for one day, you forget what the effect is on you after six years (of a national politician’s term),” Lacson said.

Guanzon said last June that the same problems of vote buying and the spread of fake news could hound the elections in May 2022, expressing her wish that these threats would be eradicated.

She also warned political candidates for the 2022 elections not to be a victim of individuals promising to manipulate the automated election results in exchange for money.
