Globe Telecom recently warned the public against SIM swap scam.
GLOBE TELECOM — The Philippines’ telecommunications company recently warned the public against the SIM swap scam and also advised its customers to stay vigilant.
A “SIM swap scam” was the last step carried out by scammers and fraudsters in order to take over one’s financial accounts — bank account details, e-wallet, trading information, and/or credit cards.
The said modus often involved a victim who had been long targeted for the scam as the fraudster had invested time to gather bank account details, online credentials, personal facts, email addresses, and identification (ID) together with the mobile number registered with the bank for sending a one-time password (OTP).
In addition, Globe encouraged its customers to use unique and strong passwords for their digital accounts, regularly change the passwords, and use other authentication methods such as applications, security keys, or device prompts.
Globe also advised its customers not to share personal information such as anniversary dates, birth dates, TIN, company or school ID, passport details, and other information on social media as these may compromise a customer’s safety.
The telco also noted that fraudsters and scammers may get the answer to one’s security questions from those details.
Moreover, scammers may also call pretending to be bank or telco representatives requiring some bank details and personal information in exchange for some offers or perks.
Delivery packages, utility bills, bank statements, and other documents that contain one’s personal information disposed of in an unsecured manner can be a source of identity theft as well.
