NEW NORMAL IN PH – Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Philippines’ education system shifted toward a new normal – blended learning.

The new learning system in the Philippines is called “Blended Learning”. Through this, students have the opportunity to utilize both modular learning schemes and online classes.
ISSUES WITH BLENDED LEARNING
It’s easy to point out the issues with the new normal in Philippine education. For example, not all students have access to the internet and have the means to access it. As such, the poorer sectors of the Philippines can’t join classes online.
Because of this, students are left doing “modules”. These are guidebooks with lectures and activities that students need to finish and pass to their teacher by the end of a set period of time.
However, thousands upon thousands of cases are brought up where the parents end up doing the assignments for their kids. Moreover, this has become more prevalent in elementary students in the prime days of their education journey.
ADVANTAGES OF BLENDED LEARNING
The “new normal” education has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. Amid the pandemic, the Department of Education (DepEd) provided students with flexible options for learning.
Additionally, with a more accessible internet connection, students can learn at their own pace. Aside from this, students also learn about the importance of communication and technology.
Literally, everything students need to know about their homework and activities is available online. And, the best part about it is that they can access it with a click of a finger.
DISADVANTAGES OF NEW NORMAL EDUCATION
Although distance learning provides ease and convenience for students, not everyone can enjoy its benefits. Also, it provides several disadvantages when it comes to learning in general.
As the country shifted toward a new education system, students and teachers are caught off-guard. Many say that they are unprepared to take the new system. Teachers also expressed a lack of training to handle the “new normal”.
Here are some examples of distance learning disadvantages:
- Technical difficulties are almost unavoidable.
- Not every student can afford to pursue online classes
- Modular learning removes the “learning process”.
- Students can’t ask question via modular learning.
- Some teachers are not tech-savvy.
- Social interactions with students are all online.
