COMELEC warned political aspirants against the “superspreader” gathering of supporters.
COMELEC — The Commission on Elections on Tuesday warned political aspirants against the “superspreader” gathering of supporters.
According to COMELEC Spokesperson James Jimenez, political aspirants who allowed rallies or mass gatherings of their supporters during the filing of certificates of candidacy (COC) will be held accountable if such became “superspreader” events.
The politicians who allow mass gatherings of their supporters, are the ones to blame if their pre-COC filing rallies turn out to be superspreaders.

Jimenez previously said that the poll body encouraged political aspirants not to engage in “premature campaigning” since the campaign period has not yet started.
However, he admitted that political aspirants can start campaigning since there’s no more legal prohibition against “premature campaigning”.

Aspirants to national positions started filing their certificates of candidacy last October 1 and the filing of COCs will only be until October 8. The campaign period for candidates in local elective positions was set from March 25 to May 7, 2022.
Fourteen (14) aspirants filed their certificates of candidacy for national positions in the 2022 elections during the 5th day of COC filing. Of these, 6 will run for president, 1 for vice president, and 7 for senator.
Aside from this, 26 partylist groups officially filed their certificates of nomination and acceptance (CONA) at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila in Pasay City.
Meanwhile, COMELEC Education and Information Department Director Elaiza David-Sabile said that no untoward incidents occurred during the 5th day of the COC filing.
“We take this as a good sign and we would like to also take this opportunity to enjoin the aspirants to avoid last-day rush of filing,” David-Sable said.
