Diokno and Colmenares filed their certificates of candidacy before the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) at the Harbor Garden Tent inside the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila in Pasay City.

Both Diokno and Colmenares will be seeking to redeem their losses in the 2019 elections wherein not a single opposition candidate won a seat in the 12 open slots for the Senate.

Diokno took his oath as a member of Katipunan ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino (KANP). He was still being endorsed by the Liberal Party (LP).

According to him, he has found a party that’s aligned with his principles and beliefs.

Colmenares, on the other hand, will still be the Makabayan coalition’s bet for the Senate.

The career trajectory of both Diokno and Colmenares was very similar as Diokno was the chairman of the Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG) and Colmenares was the chairman of the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers (NUPL).

Diokno and Colmenares were both counsels to two of the 37 petitions against the anti-terror law and both argued before the Supreme Court, which has yet to decide on President Duterte’s contentious law that was feared to target any form of dissent.

Colmenares’ National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers represented the drug war victims who sent communications to the International Criminal Court (ICC), while Diokno’s Free Legal Assistance Group was one of the two petitioners in the Supreme Court case against the constitutionality of President Duterte’s drug war.
