COMELEC Called to Extend Period for Voter Registration
COMELEC – The Commission on Elections spoke on the calls of Congress and the other sectors to extend the voter registration period.
For several days now, people are lining up in designated areas across the nation for voter registration. Many Filipinos are visibly eager to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming Election 2022.
As the filing of candidacies (COCs) is set to begin in October, several politicians have already talked to the public regarding their political plans. Some incumbent politicians announced that they are running for president in the next election.
The deadine for the voter registration for Election 2022 is September 30, 2021. However, many people have yet to register thus there are calls to the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) to extend the registration period.
Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, COMELEC assured that they are not deaf to the calls of the public to extend the voter registration period. However, they will still meet regarding it.
According to the poll body’s spokesperson, James Jimenez, they will be having a committee management meeting to “game out every scenario” if the voter registration period will be extended. He assured that they are going to talk about all kinds of extensions.
Reportedly, the management committee is tasked to make a recommendation to the en banc and the decision is expected to be released by September 29, 2021 – a day before the current deadline for voter registration.
COMELEC previously expressed to Congress that they cannot afford to extend the voter registration period for another month. The poll body said that they can agree to extend the voter registration period for a week after October 8 or the filing of candidacy period. The lawmakers don’t agree to it.
