Zoom announced its new Focus mode
Zoom announced its new Focus mode that was meant to keep students from getting distracted while attending a virtual classroom, while still allowing the teacher to monitor participants inside the room.
Zoom’s new feature came as the new school year approached and as the threat of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) remained serious.
It seemed likely that virtual rooms were going to be sticking around for some and so it’s good that the platform was adding features like Focus mode in order to improve tele-learning.
When activated, Zoom’s Focus mode will make it so that a meeting’s participants won’t be able to see each other’s screen shares or videos, while the host was still able to see everyone’s web cameras.
The said feature provided some of the control found in Webinar mode without the complexity and lack of flexibility that came with it.
The Verge reported that Focus mode appeared to be available to free accounts.

Also, The Verge explained that participants will still see their own video as well as any screen shares or videos that were spotlighted by the host, adding that participants will also be able to see the names of other participants as well as any emoji reactions.
Overall, Zoom’s Focus mode seemed like a decent way to keep students from distracting each other during the class and the said feature could even have its uses outside of a learning environment.
Moreover, Zoom’s Focus mode support article stated that the said feature can be enabled or locked on for accounts, groups, or individual users. After turning it on for one’s account, the said feature can be accessed by clicking the More button while in a meeting.
