Malacañang on Thursday thanked former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III for his contribution and services to the Philippines.
President Rodrigo Duterte’s office thanked former president Aquino for his service to the Filipino people as it condoled with the nation over the former leader’s death.
Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque started his regular press briefing by offering a moment of silence for the late former president.
“We commiserate and condole with the family and loved ones of former president Benigno Simeon Aquino III as we extend our condolences on his untimely demise. We are grateful to the former president for his contribution and services to the country. We ask our people to offer a prayer for the eternal repose of our former chief executive. Rest in peace, Mr. President,” Roque said in a statement.
Rappler reported that President Duterte himself has yet to speak publicly about the death of former president Aquino as he was set to attend a number of ceremonies in Malacañang on Thursday.

Meanwhile, former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo expressed sympathy on former president Aquino’s death.
“My family and I join the Filipino people in prayers and sympathy on the passing of former President Benigno Aquino III. Aside from his own achievements, he will be remembered as part of the Aquino family that has contributed three important people to the history of our nation, Senator Ninoy Aquino and our 11th and 15th presidents, Cory and Noynoy Aquino,” Arroyo said in a statement.
Also, former President Joseph “Erap” Estrada mourned the death of former President Aquino.
In a statement, Estrada said that he and the Filipino people were saddened by the passing of former President Aquino He also condoled with the Aquino family.
“Ako at ang sambayanan ay nalulungkot sa pagpanaw ni former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III. Sa pagkakataong ito, ang aking tanging dasal ay bigyan kayo ng Diyos ng lakas ng loob. Paalam, PNoy!” Estrada said.

Malacañang has yet to say if it will offer to hold a state funeral for former president Aquino.
When former president Noynoy Aquino’s mother, former president Corazon Aquino, died last 2009, their family declined a state funeral. Then-President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo taped a message to the nation right after hearing the news about former president Corazon Aquino’s death and declared 10 days of national mourning.
