Here’s the response of Duque on Isko Moreno’s face shield suggestion
Health Secretary Francisco Duque III reacted to Manila Mayor Isko Moreno’s suggestion to stop using face shields in public places.
According to Duque, it is not yet time to take off the face shield because only 2 percent are completely vaccinated against coronavirus in the country.
The secretary said Moreno’s suggestion would have been good if vaccination coverage in the Philippines was large.
“Hindi pa pwedeng tanggalin ang face shield policy for now when our two-dose vaccination coverage is a little over 2% due to still inadequate vaccine supply,” Duque said.
Duque also asserted that based on the study by The Lancet, the face shield is effective against COVID-19.
“There are many scientific studies showing that face shields in combination with face masks and more than 1 meter social distancing provide a greater than 95% protection,” he cited.
Several health experts in the country opposed the use of face shields and one of which is Dr. Gideon Lasco.
“What do all countries that have controlled COVID have in common? They never required face shields,” Lasco said.
“It’s time to end the Philippines’ baseless, inconvenient, and environmentally harmful face shield mandate, especially in outdoor spaces where there’s zero evidence of its benefit,” Lasco added.
