On Saturday, the Department of Health warned doctors that prescribing ivermectin in order to combat COVID-19 would be an “off label” prescription and that they’ll be held accountable since its current certificate of product registration (CPR) with the country’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was still for its use as an “anti-nematode drug”.

DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire noted that the certificate of product registration, which Lloyd Laboratories applied for, was for the use of locally-manufactured Ivermectin as an “anti-nematode drug.”

According to Vergeire, it’s going to be an “off-label” use if ivermectin will be prescribed by doctors for other purposes, adding that the accountability will rest on the physician who had prescribed the said drug.

Kung sakaling gagamitin ‘yang ivermectin ng ibang mga doktor [for other purposes], it’s going to be an off-label use and ang accountability and liability will be resting upon the physician who has prescribed this,” Vergeire said.

The Food and Drug Administration on Friday granted the certificate of product registration for Lloyd Laboratories for the manufacture and sale of human-grade ivermectin.

Previously, the said drug was only approved in the Philippines for use on animals.

However, FDA Director-General Eric Domingo clarified that the certificate of product registration wasn’t for the use of the said drug in treating and preventing COVID-19.

Meanwhile, the Philippines was set to conduct human clinical trials in order to determine whether or not the said drug can be used to treat COVID-positive patients.
