Vice President Leni Robredo thanked her supporters for their “lugaw” drive on her 56th birthday.
NATIONAL LUGAW DAY — Vice President Leni Robredo recently thanked her supporters for their “lugaw” drive on her 56th birthday.
In a report on Manila Bulletin, Robredo said that her supporters gave away a total of over 30,000 bowls of “lugaw” or rice porridge during her birthday last April 23, 2021.
Robredo’s supporters marked April 23 as the “National Lugaw Day” in reference to trolls calling her “Lugaw Queen” just because her supporters sold “lugaw” to support her vice presidential campaign last 2016.

Speaking on her weekly radio show, she said that she appreciated the gestures by her supporters because the “lugaw” feeding program wasn’t promoting a certain candidate for a certain position.
Earlier, Robredo asked her supporters not to put her face or name on the bowls of “lugaw” and just focus on helping their fellowmen instead.
“Gusto nating maipaalam sa kanila na sobrang appreciated natin ‘yung effort kasi ito pagpapakita ng suporta pero hindi naman talaga nagpopromote ng isang kandidato. Ang natutulungan talaga iyong communities kasi ngayon sobrang grabe ang dami ng nagugutom,” Robredo said.
Robredo turned 56 last Friday but she’s under home quarantine because she was exposed to a close-in security who had tested positive for COVID-19.
She had tested “negative” twice to a COVID-19 RT-PCR test, but her doctors advised her to complete the minimum 10-day quarantine.

Reports have reached her on Facebook that there were 105 groups from different places in the Philippines who joined the said initiative. Those groups served 30,000 bowls of “lugaw” on Robredo’s birthday.
The simultaneous “lugaw” feeding programs were held in Manila, Iloilo, Negros, Quezon City, Maguindanao, Cagayan de Oro, Camarines Sur, Bataan, Marawi, Makati City, and Aklan, among others.
Robredo admitted that she’s nervous about the “lugaw” feeding program for fear that it might violate minimum health safety protocols, and so she reminded her supporters to observe physical distancing at all times.

She also said that she can’t thank her supporters one by one because there were other smaller groups who chose to do their feeding program without linking themselves to the bigger groups of supporters.
The “lugaw” drive, according to a report on Manila Bulletin, started as a response to the “lugaw is essential” statement from Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque.
After Roque clarified that “lugaw is essential,” netizens were then quick to point out that Robredo — whose pandemic response had been commended by different groups — was also essential.
