In a report on CNBC, Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said that people will “likely” need a third dose of COVID-19 vaccine within 12 months of getting fully inoculated.

Bourla’s comments, according to CNBC, were made public on Thursday but were taped last April 1.

According to Bourla, it’s possible that people will annually need to get inoculated against the coronavirus disease.

A likely scenario is that there will be likely a need for a third dose, somewhere between six and 12 months and then from there, there will be an annual revaccination, but all of that needs to be confirmed. And again, the variants will play a key role. It is extremely important to suppress the pool of people that can be susceptible to the virus,” Bourla told CNBC’s Bertha Coombs during an event with CVS Health.

Bourla’s comment came after Johnson & Johnson CEO Alex Gorsky told CNBC last February that people may need to get annually inoculated against COVID-19, just like seasonal flu shots.

Researchers still didn’t know how long protection against the coronavirus disease last once someone had been fully inoculated.

Last February, BioNTech and Pfizer said that they’re testing a third dose of their COVID-19 vaccine in order to better understand the immune response against new COVID-19 variants.

Late last month, the National Institutes of Health began testing a third dose of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine that was designed to protect against a problematic COVID-19 variant first found in South Africa.

On Wednesday, Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel told CNBC that the company hoped to have a booster shot for its COVID-19 vaccine available in the fall.
