Pope Francis on Sunday thanked Filipino people for the joy they brought to the whole world and to Christian communities.
Pope Francis on Sunday celebrated Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica in order to mark 500 years since the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines.
In his homily, Pope Francis shared that 500 years have passed since the Christian message first arrived in the Philippines, adding that Filipinos received the joy of the Gospel and that joy was evident in the Filipino people.
The Pope added that he had often said that in Rome, Filipino women were “smugglers” of faith as they sow the faith wherever they go to work.
“I want to thank you, then, for the joy you bring to the whole world and to our Christian communities,” the Pope said.
In his homily, Pope Francis also encouraged Filipinos to persevere in the work of evangelization and to keep bringing the faith — the good news they had received 500 years ago — to others.

The Mass began with a procession of a replica of the Magellan’s cross and an image of the Sto. Niño (child Jesus).
Pope Francis was joined by Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle and the pope’s vicar of Rome Cardinal Angelo De Donatis.
Meanwhile, most dioceses in the Philippines would launch the year-long commemoration on Easter Sunday, April 4, 2021.
