Phivolcs Records 20 Volcanic Earthquakes in Mount Bulusan
The state volcanology agency Phivolcs observed an increase of volcanic activity at Mount Bulusan in Sorsogon although it remain under normal status.
On Thursday (March 18, 2021), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) is currently monitoring the Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon due to the increase of volcanic activity.
Phivolcs recorded at least 20 volcanic earthquakes in the last 30 hours including one “tornillo” and three low frequency events. The volcano indicates an increase chances of steam driven or phreatic eruptions.
The local government unit of Sorsogon advised the residents around the Mount Bulusan to take precautionary measures. The residents are also prohibited to enter the Permanent Danger Zone of the volcano.
“Furthermore, people living within valleys and along river/stream channels especially on the southeast, southwest and northwest sector of the edifice should be vigilant against sediment-laden stream flows and lahars in the event of heavy and prolonged rainfall,” Phivolcs says.
However, Mount Bulusan remains under normal level, which indicates very weak to weak emission of white steam-laden. The agency told the public to wait for further updates and information.
