In a report on PUSH, composer Daniella Ann Balagtas revealed the story behind her winning Himig 11th Edition composition “Marupok” after besting thousands of song entries from songwriters all over the Philippines and with her composition being named “Best Song” in the biggest songwriting competition in the country.

Daniella shared that the title was the last one to enter the song when she’s writing the song. According to her, she’s a storyteller as she first wrote a story about a woman’s experience in a relationship.

With her dance-pop song “Marupok” performed by KZ Tandingan during the culmination night of Himig 11th Edition last March 21, Daniella said she couldn’t be any happier with her award-winning interpreter.

According to her, KZ was the “ideal interpreter for anyone” as she knew she wasn’t the only one who wanted KZ to interpret. Daniella also shared that KZ was so versatile and one of her visions for her song was an OPM sound that could stand on the world stage.

She also shared with the local press during the Himig 11th Edition Winners virtual mediacon how her passion for songwriting came to be.

I’ve been writing my whole life and I think it’s less of my technical skill that qualifies me as a songwriter but more of my love for music which I know I share with so many other people. That’s why there are so many songwriters. And I’m very privileged to be selected for this,” Daniella said.
