Health Expert Says DOH Reported Daily COVID Cases Was “Deceiving”
HEALTH EXPERT ON DOH – Recently, the Department of Health (DOH) reported an all-time-high number of COVID-19 cases.
Last year, the peak daily cases was around 6,752. But, after almost a year of strict lockdowns, the number of daily cases peaked at 7,999.
However, according to Dr. Tony Leachon, the former COVID-19 task force adviser, the number was “deceiving”. In a Twitter post, Leachon likened the DOH to sellers trying to make their product look cheap.
“The latest record of 7,999 new infections looks deceiving, something that traders do to make the price of their products look low”.
Still, Leachon expressed concern given the DOH’s past history of reporting cases. “I’m just disturbed given their past history of fresh and late cases”, he added.
Previously, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque boasted on how the government was doing an “excellent” job in handling the pandemic. Roque explained that the Philippines’ low mortality rate was proof that what the government was doing “very well”.
But, Leachon believes that this sentiment could become detrimental to the country. In his Tweet, Leachon reminded the government that the low death rates were due to the sacrifices and “heroic work of our frontiners”.
Instead, Leachon believes that even though the death rate is low, the government should be on “war mode” against COVID-19.
“Our government harps on the fact that it is doing a good job because the recorded deaths from COVID-19 are low and below world averages. Because of this, there seems to be no sense of urgency. We should try to analyze and think more”
