Monitors Kanlaon and Mayon Volcanoes Placed Under Alert Level 1, Phivolcs Says
The state volcanology agency Phivolcs is closely monitoring the Kanlaon and Mayon volcanoes for showing abnormalities.
On Saturday (February 20, 2021), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology released the latest updates regarding Kanlaon and Mayon volcanoes. Aside from these two volcanoes, they agency also monitors Taal Volcano under Alert Level 1.
The seismology bureau announced that the Mayon Volcano in Albay province and the Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island shows irregularities. The two volcanoes have been placed under Alert Level 1 indicating an abnormal condition.
Kanlaon Volcano is under a period of unrest and the public are prohibited to enter the 4-kilometer permanent danger zone due to possible phreatic eruptions and sudden steam emission.
Meanwhile, Mayon Volcano has been placed under Alert Level 1 after one rockfall event during the past 24-hour observation period has been recorded. No magmatic eruption around the volcano has been recorded.
“Kahapon nga nagsagawa po tayo ng NDRRMC full council meeting at napag-usapan po diyan na hindi lang Taal ang nagpapakita ng aktibidad ngayon po kundi si Mayon Volcano at saka si Kanlaon Volcano,” NDRRMC Spokesperson Mark Timbal said.
