PGH Workers Protest & Demand Safer Vaccine Against COVID-19
PGH WORKERS PROTEST – Health workers from the Philippine General Hospital held a protest calling for safer vaccines against the coronavirus.
The Philippines is expected to receive the first doses of China’s Sinovac vaccine on Sunday. Afterward, the vaccine roll-out would begin on Monday with health workers on the government’s top priority for the vaccine.
However, the Sinovac vaccine didn’t receive the warm welcome the government wanted. Earlier studies of Sinovac revealed that the vaccine was significantly less effective against COVID-19 compared to other brands.
Due to this, the Food and Drug Administration cautioned the use of this vaccine on medical workers. But, according to Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, the government was not dissuading health workers to get inoculated.
During an interview with ANC, FDA Director-General Eric Domingo said:
Since that is the science and that is the evidence that we have, we can only give authorization for use in those [groups] that we know will benefit and in this case, it’s 18 to 59 [year-olds]. Not everybody is the same… There’s not one vaccine that will fit each and every person. What we try to do is we try to guide the decision-makers when they do roll out a program
Still, the All UP Workers, Union, Doctors, Nurses, and students, demanded that the government provide health workers with safe coronavirus vaccines with a high efficacy rate.
