Facebook was trying to compete with Fitbit and the Apple Watch as it was reportedly working on an Android-powered smartwatch.
With Portal video conferencing smart displays and Oculus VR headsets, Facebook was increasingly becoming a hardware maker as one Facebook product that was reportedly in the pipeline was a smartwatch that was trying to compete with Apple’s Apple Watch Google-owned Fitbit.
The Information recently broke the news and detailed how the Facebook smartwatch would be powered by “an open-source version of Google’s Android software.” This was similar to the Oculus Go and Oculus Quest 2, with the report also revealing that Facebook was working on making its own operating system for “future hardware” as well.
In addition, the smartwatch would have its own cellular connection rather than have to rely on a smartphone for internet access.

One core aspect of Facebook smartwatch, according to a report on 9to5Google, would be “social features” like sending quick messages through Facebook’s platforms. Another feature of the smartwatch was “tracking workouts” with friends or communicating with a trainer as this directly tied into the other health focus.
Facebook reportedly had plans to connect with other fitness devices such as Peleton’s smart stationary bikes.
A release, as per the report, wasn’t expected until next year with pricing to be “near the cost to produce it”. As such, the company would extract value from service usage.
Facebook was also planning a second-generation smartwatch “as soon as 2023,” revealing an aggressive timeline.
