Twitter officially transferred the @POTUS account to US President Joe Biden
Minutes after Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th President of the United States, Twitter officially transferred the @POTUS account to him.
Twitter on Wednesday (US time) had transferred the White House accounts to the Biden team after US President Joe Biden and US Vice President Kamala Harris took the oath of office.
In addition to @POTUS, those Twitter accounts were the following: @WhiteHouse, @VP, @FLOTUS, and @PressSec.
Also, Twitter has created a new account for Harris’ husband, Douglas Emhoff and labeled him as the @SecondGentleman.
And yes, all Twitter-generated accounts were tagged as “US government account”.

With the said changeover, the White House accounts didn’t carry over the millions of followers from the previous administration (unlike in 2017, when former US President Donald Trump inherited former US President Barack Obama’s @POTUS followers).
In a report on Variety, Twitter transferred the followers of the Biden team’s previous handles to the new accounts: from @PresElectBiden to @POTUS; from @Transition46 to @WhiteHouse; from @SenKamalaHarris to @VP; from @FLOTUSBiden to @FLOTUS; and from @PressSecPsaki to @PressSec.
Variety also reported that Twitter would alert the previous followers of the White House accounts to let them re-follow the new administration’s Twitter accounts.
As of this writing, Biden’s @POTUS account already reached over 4.2 million followers. Also, the @WhiteHouse account reached 2.9 million followers and Harris’ @VP account reached 6.9 million followers as well.

Wondering what happened to the Trump administration’s @POTUS account on Twitter?
Twitter explained that the Trump administration’s @POTUS account was archived under @POTUS45, just as the Obama administration’s @POTUS account that was archived under @POTUS44.
Moreover, the @POTUS45 archive — as well as those for @WhiteHouse45, @VP45, @PressSec45, @FLOTUS45, and @SecondLady45 — were managed by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).
The agency said that it would “receive, preserve, and provide public access to all official Trump Administration social media content” — including deleted posts from @POTUS and @realDonaldTrump.
Former US President Obama became the first US President to use the @POTUS account on Twitter, which was officially launched last May 2015.
