Makati Shangri-La was the latest hotel hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, which had closed countless businesses because of extended lockdowns and suspending economic activity.

With this, the Shangri-La Group issued a statement saying that Makati Shangri-La will be temporarily closing its doors starting February 1, 2021 because of “continued low business levels” caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

John Rice, the Vice President of Operations (Philippines) at Shangri-La Group, stated in a letter obtained by Summit Media that the almost 30-year-old hotel would be temporarily closing its doors.

The letter — addressed to Philippine Hotel Owners Association (PHOAI) President Arthur Lopez — referred to the move as the company’s decision to “reorganize the workforce.”

However, Rice said that the Shangri-La Group was looking forward to reopening the hotel at a later date when “business conditions have improved”.

Despite our best efforts, the prolonged recovery timeline has resulted in increasing financial pressure on the company here in the Philippines,” Rice said in a statement.
