Gov’t Identifying Measures On How LGUs Can Help Procure COVID-19 Vaccines, Says Galvez

The national government was already identifying measures on how local government units (LGUs) could help in procuring COVID-19 vaccines, vaccine czar Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. on Wednesday said.

In a virtual forum at Kapihan sa Manila Bay, Galvez said that they’re looking at the possibility that the LGU was also part of the government and they’re making some explorations if the LGU would be allowed.

Galvez, who was also the chief implementer of the national government’s COVID-19 efforts, said that mayors from Metro Manila had expressed intentions to assist the national government in its COVID-19 vaccination program.

Accordingh to Galvez, mayors in Metro Manila were more than willing to help and also wanted to unburden the government because vaccinating 110 million people was a huge task for them and very unprecedented.

The Philippine government was considering to purchase COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer, Sinovac, Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology, and AztraZeneca.

It was last Friday when the Philippine government, the private sector, and AstraZeneca signed a tripartite agreement for the Philippines to secure a supply of 2.6 million COVID-19 vaccine doses.

The said supply, which would be paid for by the private sector, would inoculate more than one million Filipinos as AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine required two doses.
