DOH Reacts To Russian Sputnik V Warning To Vaccine Takers

DOH REACTS TO RUSSIAN VACCINE – Russia’s Vaccine Candidate, Sputnik V, has become one of the top contenders in the vaccine race.

However, upon going public, the Russian government asked takers of the vaccine not to drink alcohol before and after getting immunized. This sparked controversy and confusion among the public and the medical community.

But, during a virtual briefing, Department of Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire stated that this warning were merely “precautionary measures”.

According to an article from ABS-CBN, the health undersecretary said:

Yung sinasabi na nagkaroon ng warning in Russia na umiwas muna sa paginom ng alak prior and after receiving the vaccine, these are just precautionary measures

Reuters recently discovered that Russia advised those who are taking the Sputnik V not to drink alcohol 2 weeks before being immunized. Afterward, takers of the vaccine shouldn’t have alcohol in the next 42 days.

Meanwhile, Vergeire explained that:

When you drink alcohol, especially if you drink it too much, bumababa ang immunity natin. And when you take a vaccine, para magwork sa iyo ang bakuna kailangan robust ang system mo, ‘yung immune system mo ay maayos para nakakapagdevelop ng antibodies ang iyong katawan

Furthermore, Vergeire emphasized that amid the pandemic, people shouldn’t do things that could negatively affect their immune system such as drinking too much alcohol.

Currently, Pfizer and BioNTech had the most positive approval from the public. Meanwhile, the Philippines had set its eyes on procuring China’s Sinovac Vaccine or Russia’s Sputnik V around Q1 or Q2 of 2021.
