DepEd Responds To Worst Math, Science Proficiency Among 4th Graders Study
DepEd RESPONDS TO WORST MATH STUDY – The Department of Education recently responded to the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS).
Unfortunately for Filipinos, the study revealed that 4th graders had the worst maths and science proficiency amongst 58 countries. This, despite DepEd having the largest budget every single year.
Following the release of the study, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian questioned Education Undersecretary Diosdado San Antonio regarding the issue. According to San Antonio, the majority of the teachers had already prepared to perform what is expected of them.
Furthermore, Gatchalian asked the Education Undersecretary if he was satisfied with the education given in the pre-service level. As a response, San Antonio said:
Generally, I would feel that — because they are duly licensed — many of our fellow teachers are prepared to deliver what is expected of them. But there are multiple factors that influence the extent of commitment and competence that our fellow teachers would have
Moreover, he clarified that the issue with the recent study wasn’t just a simple concern. He explained that there was many factors involved in these types of issues.
Additionally, the undersecretary asserted that college and universities had already offered their best to produce quality teachers. Along with this, he emphasized that DepEd had already set requirements and guidelines for teachers’ performance.
Meanwhile, despite the abysmal rating of Filipinos in the fourth grade in math and science, San Antonio says he firmly believes that the teachers DepEd hires are “eager instruments to the provision of good quality basic education”.
