CHR Warns Gov’t On Using Yantok As It May Lead To Trauma/Humiliation
CHR WARNS GOV’T ON USING YANTOK – The Commission on Human Rights warned the government about its recent decision of allowing authorities to use a “yantok”.
As the Yuletide season dawns on the Philippines, authorities fear that the Christmas rush may cause people to breach physical distancing protocols. Due to this, the government approved the use of ratan sticks or “yantok” to enforce physical distancing.
Upon hearing of this news, the CHR was immediately alerted and concerned. According to an article from GMA, CHR spokesperson lawyer Jacqueline Ann de Guia said:
“Violence, even in its slightest suggestion, is not the best way to address the pandemic. Rather, government should continue to employ information dissemination to make the people understand the hazards of going out in the midst of a pandemic, as well as implement programs guided by the sound advice of science and health professionals“
Furthermore, the CHR said that the coronavirus pandemic isn’t an issue of peace and order, rather, one that concerns public health. However, the CHR did emphasize the need for the public to follow the imposed protocols.
