RULES:

According to an article from the Rules of Sport, the objective of Chess Boxing is:

to either beat your opponent in alternate rounds of chess or boxing. Matches can be won from either discipline with the chess coming down to checkmate or forfeit and the boxing in either a stoppage or points decision.

  • Players must not purposely waste time when playing the chess portion of the game. If the referees see that they, a 10-second penalty will be imposed on the stalling player
  • Furthermore, players must have an understanding of both boxing and chess disciplines.
  • Players must have a chess rating of at least 1800 to compete in the sport.
  • Players can win from either the chess or boxing rounds.
  • 6 rounds of chess and 5 rounds of boxing will be completed unless the contest is stopped with a winner in a previous round.

The match consists of 11 rounds that are divided into 6 rounds of chess and 5 rounds of boxing and a minute interval between each round. Both players wear boxing gloves and are removed during chess rounds.

Moreover, the players are given noise cancelling earphones so they don’t take advice from the rowdy audience. The chess side of the game is played out over a 12 minute clock and is essentially ‘speed chess’.

To win the game, you must either knock your opponent out or get a check mate or if your opponent withdraws. Meanwhile, if the chess match ends in a draw, you can win via boxing points.

Also, naturally this game first started in Berlin, Russia. Because you know, Russians.
