Apple Eyes Car Production By 2024 — Report

Apple was eyeing for a car production by 2024, according to a report.

Apple was moving forward with the production of its self-driving car technology and was targeting 2024, according to a report.

This, as people familiar with the matter told Reuters that Apple’s automotive efforts — known as “Project Titan” — had proceeded unevenly since 2014 when it first began to design its own vehicle from scratch.

Reuters reported that at one point, Apple drew back the effort to focus on its software and reassessed its goals.

Doug Field, an Apple veteran who had worked at Tesla Inc., returned to oversee the said project last 2018 and laid off 190 people from the team last 2019.

Since then, two people familiar with the effort told Reuters that Apple had progressed enough that it aimed to build a vehicle for the company’s consumers.

Apple’s goal of building a personal vehicle for its mass market contrasts with rivals such as Waymo.

With this, Apple declined to comment on its plans or its future products.

Reuters reported that making a vehicle represented a “supply chain challenge” even for Apple as the company remained unclear who would assemble an Apple-branded car.

However, sources told Reuters that they expected Apple to rely on a manufacturing partner in order to build vehicles.

Meanwhile, several sites reported that Apple could launch Apple Car in 2021 — years ahead of the target date for its car production.
