Senator Pushes For Investigations On Manila Bay Dolomite Project
MANILA BAY DOLOMITE – Senator Francis Pangilinan pushed for investigations into the potential hazards of the Manila Bay Dolomite project.
According to Pangilinan, the “nourishment project” for Manila Bay was wasteful and unnecessary. As such, he urged a probe into the potential health and environmental hazards the dolomite could incur.
Since the project went public, the scientific community, marine groups, environmental organizations, and other concerned parties highly criticized the project. The primary consensus within these groups was the project doesn’t fit its purpose of “rehabilitation”.
Instead, the groups explained that the project is more on superficial beautification. Along with this, heavy rains and strong waves already had a clear visual effect on the bay.
Because of this, Pangilinan filed Senate Resolution 565 to promote concerns regarding the project’s sustainability, legality, and environmental and public hazards. Based on an article from Inquirer, the Senator calls on to probe public officials for possibly violating these laws:
- Local Government Code
- Philippine Fisheries Code
- Wildlife Conservation Act
- Environmental Impact Assessment System
- Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees
- Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act.
Additionally, he emphasized that the problem wasn’t only isolated in Manila Bay. He said there was also the dolomite mining in Alcoy, Cebu that led to coral reef damage, causing habitat loss of endangered species.
Furthermore, the Senator also noted how the rising waves already started washing away P28 million worth of dolomite. Along with this, he also cited how strong typhoons could easily make its way to the country and quickly wash away the public’s money.
