Here’s the latest update on Kanlaon Volcano
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said that eight (8) volcanic earthquakes were recorded in the vicinity of Kanlaon Volcano in the last 24 hours.
It has been placed under Alert Level 1 due to its “abnormal condition and period of unrest.”
As a result, the public is being cautioned that “entry into the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ)” is strictly prohibited.
This was due to the “possibilities of sudden and hazardous steam-driven or phreatic eruptions.”
Pilots are also being advised that flying near the vicinity of Kanlaon Volcano is hazardous.
On November 8, 2020, Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission was measured at an average of 42 tonnes/day.
Phivolcs noted that “slight inflation of the lower and mid slopes” and “short-term electronic tilt on the southeastern flanks” have been recorded in June 2020 which means “hydrothermal or magmatic processes occurring beneath the edifice.”
Mount Kanlaon is an active stratovolcano located on the island of Negros.
It is the highest point in Negros, as well as the whole Visayas Region, with an elevation of 2,465 m (8,087 ft) above sea level.
