Iloilo Governor urged constituents to hold “low-key” Christmas activities.
Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. had encouraged his constituents to hold “low-key” Christmas activities in the component city of Passi and in 42 towns.
This, as the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) remained to be a threat to the public.
Defensor emphasized that there’s an executive order (EO) that prohibited public events that could draw a crowd as a means of containing the spread of coronavirus disease — including the lights festival.
Particularly, Defensor mentioned the Iwag Festival of Pototan town which draw thousands of spectators for its grandiose annual Christmas lights.
Defensor, however, clarified that the Executive Order didn’t mean plazas or other places should no longer be decked out with Christmas decorations.
“Of course, we still want the Christmas spirit. But we need to limit it,” Defensor reiterated.

Defensor also said that the Iloilo Provincial Capitol complex would no longer have a grandiose Christmas lights display that had been the tradition for the past years.
The complex include the old provincial jail that had been turned into the Western Visayas Regional Museum of the National Museum and the Casa Real de Iloilo.
“We don’t want it to become an attraction. We don’t want a lot of people gathered in one area,” Defensor noted.
Meanwhile, DILG Secretary Eduardo Año pushed for a digital caroling for the holiday season instead of traditional caroling.
