PCG would construct its own MEPTI in Bataan

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said that it would construct its own Marine Environmental Protection Training Institute (MEPTI) in Bataan.

This, as PCG Commandant Admiral George V. Ursabia Jr. and PCG Auxiliary Commodore Mario U. Rabang signed the Deed of Usufruct for the use of 3.7 hectares of land that was located at Sitio Bato in Abucay, Bataan.

The said land, according to the Philippine Coast Guard, was intended for the establishment of said infrastructure project.

In a post on its Facebook page, the Philippine Coast Guard said that the Marine Environmental Protection Training Institute would further enhance the maritime law enforcement capabilities of the Philippine Coast Guard, specifically in protecting of the Philippines’ vast marine environment and its resources from pollution which was one of its major functions under the Philippine Coast Guard Law of 2009 or Republic Act No. 9993.

Under the said law, the Philippine Coast Guard was mandated to enforce laws and to promulgate and administer rules and regulations for the protection of marine environment and marine resources from offshore sources or pollution within the maritime jurisdiction of the country.

Also under the said law, the Philippine Coast Guard was mandated to develop oil spill response, containment, and recovery capabilities against ship-based pollution as well.
