DOH reminded the public to be cautious against leptospirosis amidst rainy season.

The Department of Health (DOH) on Friday reminded the public to be cautious against getting leptospirosis from flood waters amidst the rainy season.

This, as Leptospirosis was a water-borne illness that was caused by the leptospira bacteria.

According to the Department of Health, the said bacteria may enter to a person’s body through wounds when an individual was in contact with vegetation, flood waters, or moist soil that had been contaminated with the urine of infected animals, especially rats.

In addition, the Department of Health said that the said bacteria had an incubation period of 7-10 days.

Among the symptoms of leptospirosis were muscle pain, fever, reddish eyes, and headache for some cases. Severe cases may affect the kidney, brain, and liver.

DOH Director for Promotion and Communication Service Dr. Beverly Ho said in an online forum that exposure to flood must be avoided especially if a person has open wounds.

If ever that happens, please reach out to your health care provider so that you might be provided with necessary post-exposure prophylaxis kung kinakailangan“, Ho said.

Meanwhile, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country already reached 378,933 with 2,006 newly-reported cases as of 4:00 p.m. today, according to the Department of Health.
