A provincial governor on Monday encouraged government to fix corruption first before imposing taxes on online selling.
This, as Cavite Governor Jonvic Remulla said that the corruption storm against PhilHealth — whose officials were accused by a whistleblower of pocketing PHP 15 billion in public funds — were just one of the many “systemic injustices” implemented by those in power against those who were in need.
In a Facebook post, Remulla said that the government should use its resources into “finding”, “charging”, and structurally “improving” the system across the board, adding that the guilty shall pay for their crimes.
Remulla also said that maybe paying taxes would be worth it for everyone if they’re successful in this endeavor. In addition, Remulla encouraged the government to consider “delaying” the taxation of online selling or trading.
Moreover, Remulla said that let’s give comfort to those who were striving in order to survive as they’re not even asking for a dole out.

Remulla also said that these entrepreneurs weren’t depending on the social amelioration program as they’re just trying to make a living in order for them to provide for their families.
In addition, he said that let’s give small-scale business owners “a break” from the burden of taxes amid the pandemic and fix the issues of corruption first.
Remulla’s statement came after a recent opinion survey found that several 27.3 million Filipinos were unemployed.
Several Cavite residents had turned to the online selling of ornamental plants in order to get by, according to Remulla.
