Former COMELEC chairperson Sixto Brillantes Jr. died at the age of 80.
Sixto Brillantes Jr., a former chairperson of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), passed away on Tuesday, according to the agency said. He was 80 years old.
This, as Sixto died over two weeks since his family announced that he was having a battle with the coronavirus disease.
COMELEC Spokesperson James Jimenez said that Sixto died Tuesday at a “little past 11 a.m.” Although there were “no other immediate details” were reported about his passing.
To recall, ABS-CBN News reported that Sixto had tested positive for coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and was intubated at Medical Center Manila last July, his family said.
Zeena Brillantes previously said that he was intubated at the hospital because his oxygen level wasn’t stable despite all types of medication and “convalescent plasma”. She also said that the family didn’t know how Sixto contracted the disease.

As a prominent election lawyer, Sixto was appointed as the chairperson of COMELEC by then President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III last 2011.
During a televised briefing, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said that the Palace condoled with Sixto’s family, adding that he served the country well when he’s the chairperson of the COMELEC during his time.
