Experts from UP had recommended a 15-day extension of MECQ in NCR and nearby areas.
Experts from the University of the Philippines (UP) had recommended a 15-day modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) extension in Metro Manila and its nearby provinces.
This, as UP experts warned that a “premature” lifting of modified enhanced community quarantine might lead to an “uncontrolled” increase of coronavirus cases.
In its latest report, the OCTA research team from the University of the Philippines said that there could be 210,000 COVID-19 cases in the Philippines by the end of August if the modified enhanced community quarantine stayed implemented over certain areas.
The researchers also said that enforcing the modified enhanced community quarantine only until August 18 might lead to 230,000 cases, while a general community quarantine (GCQ) might lead to 250,000 cases.
In addition, the researchers said that a 15-day extension of modified enhanced community quarantine would allow local government units (LGUs) to improve their tracking, quarantine, and isolation procedures and would also allowed public and private sectors to ensure that their workplaces were safe.

The researchers had recommended “scaled up” testing, tracing, isolation, treatment, and health system capability.
Moreover, the researchers said that an extension of modified enhanced community quarantine would ensure that hospitals and their workers in the MECQ areas wouldn’t be overwhelmed by an increasing number of CVID-19 cases in the next few weeks.
Meanwhile, the Department of Health had recorded 161,253 total COVID-19 cases as of 4:00 p.m. Sunday, with 112,586 total recoveries and 2,665 total fatalities.
