According to a study from the National Institute of Health in the United States, it found that the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) could stay alive on surfaces for 2 to 3 days on plastic, 24 hours on cardboard, 3 hours in aerosols, and 4 hours on copper.

Meisei Industry Co., the maker of the copper foil thread in Japan, and Gunma University had jointly developed copper fiber sheets that could be used in creating face masks, gloves, and other daily items as copper was known for its “antimicrobial properties”. Gunma University and Meisei Industry Co. put its innovative products to the test by achieving its possible breakthrough in Japan’s fight against COVID-19 or coronavirus disease and to “flatten the curve”.

The copper fiber sheets featured its “light-responsive photocatalyst”, which means, it activated its high oxidizing substances that would break down the virus particles.

According to Hideyuki Itabashi, the professor at Gunma University as well as the executive chairman of Gunma University Development and Innovation, the copper fiber sheets used in creating face masks, gloves, and other daily items “breaks new ground” for preventing COVID-19 outbreaks, adding that Gunma University “would like to have it out there soon“.
