Poor Woman Drags Her Bedridden Mom to Bank for Physical Verification
A poor woman in India dragged her bedridden mom to the bank after the manager required a physical verification to confirm that she is alive.
Punjumati Dei went to the bank in behalf of her mother to get the pension of her mother amounting Rs 500 (US$6.55) from the month of April to June 2020. Dei’s 100-year-old mother has been identified as Labhe Baghel.
Unfortunately, the bank manager refused to release the COVID-19 financial assistance until Punjumati can prove that her mother is still alive. The manager insisted on physical verification for confirmation.
“I went to the bank several times in the last three months and requested the bank official to release the pension amount. However, the official informed that they would release the pension only if I bring my mother to the branch,” Punjumati said.
Punjumati attempted to explain that she can’t bring her bedridden mother to the bank because of her health condition. However, the bank would not release the money without physical proof.
The poor woman has no choice but to drag her bedridden mother to the bank. The 60-year-old lady experienced a very difficult situation just for a total amount of Rs 1,500 (US$20).
Labhe Baghel is an account holder under Jan Dhan Yojana of the Central government in Odisha, India, a financial inclusion program of the Government of India.
