Senator Gatchalian said that the DOE will continuously give electricity services to each household in preparation for the “new normal” in the Philippines.
Senator Sherwin Gatchalian said that the Department of Energy (DOE) will continuously give electricity services to each household in preparation for the “new normal” in the Philippines.
This, in order to help students using technology for distance learning as schools across the country were preparing for the “new normal” in the education system.
In a statement on Saturday, he said that continuous access to electricity was needed as radio and television may be used to provide educational content to students considering that some areas in the Philippines may not have access to internet connectivity.
Citing data from the Department of Energy in 2019, he said that 7.71% of total households in the Philippines have yet to be connected to the power grid as the majority of the number of households in the country was identified in Mindanao (with 1,187,769 households), while the remaining were found in Luzon (with 364,409 households) and Visayas (with 333,329 households).
Previously, the Department of Energy vowed 100% electrification in the Philippines by the year 2020 as the department allocated PHP 500 million to its 2020 budget of PHP 2.3 billion to its Total Electrification Program (TEP). With this, Senator Gatchalian said that the Department of Energy would make true to the department’s commitment of 100 percent electrification within 2020.
As the chairman of the Senate Committee on Energy, Senator Gatchalian suggested the use of new technology in order to give reliable electric services to each household in the Philippines as well as to accelerate total electrification in areas that were identified as having no electricity access, no home power systems, no distribution system lines, or no internet connection to any microgrid.
