This, as the Malacañan Palace issued Proclamation No. 944 declaring May 25 as a regular holiday throughout the Philippines in observance of Eid’l Fitr or a Feast of Ramadan.
Citing Republic Act No. 9177, Eid’l Fitr was usually celebrated by Muslim citizens for three days after the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
Although community quarantine measures were strictly implemented in the Philippines in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 or coronavirus disease, the Proclamation stated that the entire citizens of the Philippines should have the full opportunity to join the Muslim brethren in peace and harmony.
Signed on Tuesday, May 19, 2020, the Proclamation also stated that the observance and celebration of Eid’l Fitr were subject to existing community quarantine and social distancing measures set by the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Disease (IATF-MEID).
About Eid’l Fitr
Eid’l Fitr was an annual celebration of thanksgiving to Allah as it marked the end of three-day fasting during Ramadan. The observance has been considered a regular holiday in the Philippines since 2002.
It was the responsibility of the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) to inform the Palace on what date Eid’l Fitr should fall as the Muslim community used Hijra, an Islamic calendar. In this case, the NCMF has recommended to declare May 25 a regular holiday in the Philippines.
