Malacañang Warns Filipinos of Possible ECQ Reimplementation After Some Mall Shoppers Violate Health Standards
The Malacañang Palace warned the public of possible ECQ reimposition after a massive number of shoppers headed to malls.
Last Saturday (May 18, 2020), the Philippine government eased the Enhanced Community Quarantine and changed it to General Community Quarantine. It is the first day that the government eased the lockdown protocols.
Unfortunately, a massive amount of people trooped various shopping malls in Metro Manila and other areas reportedly defy the quarantine guidelines including the social distancing measures, which is the safest way to avoid coronavirus disease.
Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said that he understands that people want to go out but they should obey the health standard. He also warned the public that the defiance of quarantine guidelines might cause spike in cases of coronavirus disease and the possible resumption of ECQ.
“Kung tayo po ay lalabas ng napakarami at hindi mag-o-observe ng social distanding, unang-una babalik po tayo sa ECQ. Sabi ko naman po, hindi naman po nakataga sa bato ‘yan na tayo ay nasa MECQ (modified enhanced community quarantine) na,” Roque said.
A lot of photos and videos of people violating the physical distancing measures in some shopping malls are already spreading like a wildfire online. The incidents might cause alarm and criticisms.
However, Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez described some of the reports as fake news and presented photos of their inspection of several malls in Metro Manila.
