Bb. Pilipinas shared this COVID-19 First Wave-Second Wave meme
The Facebook post of Binibining Pilipinas featuring the COVID-19 First Wave-Second Wave meme received criticisms from netizens.
The said meme came from the previous statement of Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Francisco Duque III that the Philippine is already experiencing the second wave of the new coronavirus.
However, the Palace clarified his statement and later on Duque corrected his previous statement. That came after the questioning that his statement received. People were asking how can he say that if there is no “flattening the curve”.
Apparently, there were memes that circulated on social media regarding the COVID-19 First Wave-Second Wave. One of those featured the Miss Universe representatives from the Philippines.
The meme combined the photos of Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach, Maxine Medina (Miss Universe 2016 Top 6), Rachel Peters (Miss Universe 2017 Top 10), and Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray.
On the photo of Pia, the “first wave” text was written, on Maxine and Rahel’s, it was “flattening the curve” while Catriona’s photo has “second wave” written on it.
With this, based on the article from the Philippine Entertainment Portal, some netizens found it “insensitive” for Bb. Pilipinas Organization to share that kind of meme. It was said tha some commented that the post was a “bad joke, rude, poor taste, inappropriate, and offensive for Maxine and Rachel”.
On the other hand, there were netizens who called the meme “witty, funny, and clever” as they believe that there is nothing wrong with the post. Based on the article, there were also those who pointed out that it is against the advocacy of women empowerment.
As of the writing, the Bb. Pilipinas FB Page already deleted the post.
