Mamang Sorbetero Jobless This Summer Due To ECQ

No job this summer for Mamang Sorbetero

This summer, Mamang Sorbetero is jobless due to the enhanced community quarantine amid the COVID-19 crisis in the Philippines.

It has been a part of Filipino culture to wait for the familiar sound of the bell from sorbeteros every summer. Kids would happily go out of their houses to buy the Pinoy version of ice cream. The popularity of people selling ice cream on the streets was even immortalized in the song Mamang Sorbetero of Celeste Legaspi.

Placed in colorful ice cream trolley, ice cream vendors would bear the heat of the summer sun in order to earn for their living. This scenario is so common every summer. However, this sunny season, a different scenario is expected.

Due to the crisis that the Philippines is facing right now because of the coronavirus outbreak, many people became jobless because of the enhanced community quarantine.

Those street vendors are no longer allowed to roam around to sell their products and that included Mamang Sorbetero, especially in Luzon where the community quarantine was first implemented.

On the official Twitter account of GMA News, a photo of an ice cream vendor was posted. In the background were the ice cream trollies that would probably not see the heat of the sun this summer.

Netizens sympathize with the sad situation of ice cream vendors this summer due to enhanced community quarantine.
