GLOBAL SPORTS – The 2019 novel coronavirus (or COVID-19) was “heavily disrupting” sports around the globe, with sports events being postponed.
This, as the MotoGP races in Qatar and Thailand postponed, a host of football matches also rescheduled, and having increasing concerns surrounding the Tokyo Olympics later this year.
The COVID-19 cast a long shadow over the start of MotoGP season with Sunday’s Qatar Grand Prix called off, followed by the March 22 race in Thailand. Thailand MotoGP Organizing Committee Chairman Anutin Charnvirakul clarified that the event in Thailand was “postponed” until time will allow them to do the said event.
Also, the Shanghai Grand Prix, one of the early races in the Formula One season which was set on April 19, has already been postponed, yet organizers said that the season-opening in Australia on March 15 will go as planned.
Olympic chiefs already set their meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday in Lausanne to tackle the impact of COVID-19 on its preparations for the summer Games in Tokyo.
Other global sports events were also under immediate threat, including the remaining matches in this year’s Six Nation rugby union tournament were at risk, yet an emergency meeting of the organizers in Paris on Monday made “no immediate changes” to the schedule.
