4.4 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Eastern Samar
EASTERN SAMAR – PHIVOLCS recorded a 4.4 magnitude earthquake in a part of Samar today, March 9, 2020.
In the Philippines, the agency that records quakes and other natural events happening in the different areas of the country is the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. It is more commonly called as PHIVOLCS.
Everyday, PHIVOLCS records several quakes happening in the different parts of the bulletin. It releases an advisory regarding such natural occurrences.
The Phivolcs bulletin contains the time of occurrence of the quake, the location, the depth of focus, its origin, and the magnitude. It also cites intensities felt in the different areas due to the quake.
Also, PHIVOLCS states in its bulletin whether there are expected damages from the quake. It is also through it that it announces to the public whether or not there are possible aftershocks.
Recently, PHIVOLCS released a bulletin containing the record of the earthquake that hit Eastern Samar. Based on the quake-recording agency, the 4.4 magnitude quake hit Dolores early today, March 9, 2020.
The quake was located at 12.04°N, 125.93°E – 049 km S 90° E of Dolores. It was 005 kilometers deep and it was tectonic in origin. PHIVOLCS recorded the following instrumental intensities:
- Intensity I – Palo, Leyte
- Intensity II – Borongan City
In its bulletin, PHIVOLCS stated that there is no expected damages caused by the quake. Also, the agency did not issue warning of possible aftershocks.
