Italy Losts 67 Italian Priests Due to 2019 Coronavirus

ITALIAN PRIESTS – Sixty-seven (67) priests in Italy died of the pandemic 2019 novel coronavirus or COVID-19.

One of the nations that was hit hard by the 2019 novel coronavirus is Italy. In fact, it is now the country with the most number of coronavirus deaths across the globe.

A partial lockdown was one of the first moves taken by the Italian government to prevent the spread of coronavirus in the country. Travel restrictions were set in Lombardy region and 14 provinces in the country.

However, it was visibly not enough to curb the spread of the disease. The coronavirus infected cases and deaths continued to go an upward trend.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte extended the lockdown covering the whole Italy. Currently, the COVID-19 death toll is over 7,500 with a total of 74,386 confirmed coronavirus in the country.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, among the people who died due to coronavirus in Italy are 67 Italian priests. Citing the report of Avvenire newspaper, the youngest priest who died is 53 years old.

Based on the report, Pope Francis told the priests “to have the courage to go out and see the sick”. As stated in the paper, 22 of these Italian priests who died were in the Bergamo diocese, the epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak in Italy.

Avvenire stated that priests also contract the disease and pass away like ordinary citizens. For several days now, the country is recording hundreds of deaths due to coronavirus daily.

  1. This is awful, people in their death beds needs sacrament too. May the Holy Father give sacrament over television or social media platforms to avoid personal contact with the sickly. God bless.
