In a public session on Monday (Tuesday in the Philippines), WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that people must have time to prepare instead of spending their time on fear and panic.

WHO was working with Google in order to ensure the public that they get facts from the United Nations (UN) health agency first when they search for information about the 2019 novel coronavirus. Social media platforms — including Twitter, Facebook, Tencent, and TikTok — have also taken steps in order to limit the spread of misinformation and rumors about the virus outbreak.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus also said that the recent outbreaks — such as the 2019 novel coronavirus and Ebola — demonstrated the defects of the “binary” emergency system, saying that it was “too restrictive, too simplistic, and not fit for purpose.”
