Facebook Cancels Developers Conference Due To COVID-19

Facebook canceled its annual developers conference due to COVID-19.

Facebook canceled its annual F8 developers conference due to fears about the possible spread of the 2019 novel coronavirus, now named COVID-19.

This, as the F8 developers conference was the annual event of Facebook. In a statement, Facebook said that the company has made “the difficult decision” to cancel its annual F8 event in light of the growing concerns around COVID-19, adding that the cancellation was made in order to prioritize the health and safety of its developer partners, employees, as well as “everyone who helps put F8 on.”

The face-to-face interaction at the conference center in the Silicon Valley of San Jose will be replaced with presentations streamed online. In a message to developers, the director of platform partnerships Konstantinos Papamiltiadis said that F8 was “an incredibly important event for Facebook,” admitting that it was “a tough call to make”. Papamiltiadis added that they explored other alternatives in order to keep the in-person part of F8, yet it was important for them to lead an inclusive event and “it didn’t feel right to have F8 without our international developers in attendance.”

The COVID-19 epidemic has prompted warnings of a financial impact from Apple, Microsoft, and other tech giants. Meanwhile, Facebook and Microsoft announced that they were canceling this year’s Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco.
