The government of the Philippines started Friday the process of terminating its Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) with the United States as ordered by President Rodrigo Duterte.
This was confirmed by Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo.
Panelo told reporters in Malacañang that Manila will no longer wait for Washington’s response on President Duterte’s warning that gave the US a month to do the correction on Sen. Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa’s canceled US visa. He also said that US Ambassador Sung Kim scheduled a meeting with Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea either on Friday or Saturday to discuss the development.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. on Twitter said he asked Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana to “start the process of terminating” the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) with the US He also asked Lorenzana to inform the Philippine Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
@DFAPHL Leaving for Wash DC on unrelated matters. But called @dndphl Sec Lorenzana as Vice Chair—I am Chair of VFA—to start process of terminating USFVA. Step 1 calling the Senate Foreign Relations Committee because on our side it is a treaty; on US side Executive Agreement.

Locsin was the chairman of the Visiting Forces Agreement, while Lorenzana was served as the vice-chair.
